Maitland Technical College

A college, a museum and a gallery

West Maitland Technical College

Maitland Regional Art Gallery, 2010.

In 1910 West Maitland Technical College’s new premises were opened. Designed by government architect Walter Liberty Vernon, the building served the college until 1987. It then went into private ownership. In 2001 it was acquired by Maitland City Council as the home for the Maitland Regional Art Gallery (MRAG) and, in 2009, an extension designed by architect Paul Berkemeier was opened.

To mark the opening of the new building and to recognise the previous uses of the site, MRAG commissioned artist Fiona Davies to research and create an art installation that responded to the original building’s use as a college and museum. The installation, Intangible Collection, was on display in the Gallery from August 2009 to February 2010.
