Maitland and district have been served by a public hospital from the 1840s. From 1849 to the present the hospital has been located on the same site. In early 2022 a new Maitland Hospital will open on a new site. The new hospital will offer more beds, modern facilities, contemporary models of care and contemporary design. It will also build on the strong tradition of health service and community involvement that has anchored the institution for over 170 years.

In recognition of the significant role Maitland Hospital has played and plays in the past, present and future of the locality, NSW Health Infrastructure, Hunter New England Local Health District and Maitland City Council are partnering a project called Collected Memory. Its purpose is to document items that tell the stories of Maitland Hospital and its connections to the district and its communities, and to consider innovative ways to incorporate some of those stories into artworks that will enliven and soften the walls and spaces in the new hospital.

As background for, but independently of, the Collected Memory project, research is being undertaken into the history of the hospital. The results of some of that research are shared here.
