Born and educated in Ireland, Samuel Alcorn had a medical practice in East Maitland from the 1880s until his death in 1920. He was also, for a period, on the medical staff of the Maitland Hospital, and was active in community affairs. He was on east Maitland Council and served a term as mayor, was a founding member of the Maitland Scientific Society and an active member of, for example, the Mechanics’ Institute, Tennis Club, Golf Club, East Maitland Club and the Masons.

He retired from his practice in early 1920 due to ill health and passed away in August of that year.
