Profile:
Adele Hollywood was the daughter of William and Fanny Power. Her father was a local medical practitioner; her mother the only daughter of John Thompson, at one time proprietor of the Maitland Mercury. In 1909 Irish-born and trained James Hollywood joined in partnership in her father's medical practice located at 233 High Street, Maitland. In 1912, a few months after her father's passing, Adele married Hollywood. They had two daughters before, in mid-1915, James Hollywood embarked for active service in the Army Medical Corps. He was away until mid-1916. In 1919 Adele Hollywood contracted, and died from, the Spanish flu. As her granddaughter Holly McNamee (email 14 July 2020) observes ‘it would have been especially difficult to avoid the bugs’ as the family lived above the surgery in High Street.
