| Profile: | |||
| William and Ellen Butterworth arrived in New South Wales in late 1883/early 1884. Within about six months, Butterworth was appointed organist at the Wesleyan Church in West Maitland (MM 1 July 1884). From 1884 to 1909, his name appears regularly in the Maitland Mercury as the organist in a variety of concerts, the conductor of different choirs, and a music teacher. He was also organist for the West Maitland Lodge of Unity No 4, sub-conductor for the Maitland Philharmonic Society, music master for the Sacred Heart College Monte Pio and, at different times, appointed organist for St Mary’s Church and for St Paul’s. A founding member of the Maitland Scientific Society, he delivered a number of papers to the Society and served a term as its president. In 1909 he suffered a serious stroke that caused him to retire from his work as an organist. 1926 marked the diamond wedding anniversary of William Butterworth and Ellen Barnes. They had married on 13 February 1866 at the parish church, Bolton, Lancashire, England. The couple’s current address was listed as 31 Church St, West Maitland. (MM 13 February 1926 p 8). I am guessing this is the same William Butterworth. Further research is needed into his background and life. Ellen Butterworth died in 1926, noting that her residence was in Church Street (MM 22 March 1926). William Buterworth died the following year. Both are buried in the Campbell’s Hill Cemetery. |
