| Profile: | |||
| Robert Strachan’s parents were from Scotland, it seems from the same locality as David and James Dickson. In Australia, three of Robert’s sisters married into the Dickson family: Jane married David Dickson in Sydney in 1839, Agnes married James Dickson in Maitland in 1842, and Jessie married Samuel Smith Dickson in Maitland in 1850 (Powell.Ross Family Tree, Ancestry.com, Sep 2014). Robert himself married a Margaret Dickson,. The Dickson family connections explain why Robert Strachan was in a partnership with James Dickson under the name of Dickson & Co. and why, following James Dickson’s death in 1863, the partnership was dissolved and the business name changed to R. Strachan & Co (MM 3 Jan 1863: 1). Strachan continued the wholesale business until 1867 when he was declared insolvent (SRNSW Insolvency Index). At some stage Robert Strachan left Maitland and was in California when he died in 1876 (MM 24 Jun 1876). |
