Profile:
Miarus Moore was born in Norfolk, England, in about 1835. In 1860, sponsored by his brother, William Moore, Miarus and his wife, Alice, sailed to Australia on the ‘Telegraph’, arriving on 15 October in Sydney. (NSW SRO Assisted Immigrant Passenger Lists and Immigration Deposit Journals).

In about 1863, the Moores moved to Maitland, possibly attracted to move there by his brother, William, who had moved from Goulburn to Maitland at about this time. William Moore was a homeopathic practitioner. (Armstrong: 2009).

In Maitland Miarus Moore practised as a veterinary surgeon. He also worked as an auctioneer and general produce agent and, in 1870, purchased the Northumberland Coach Factory, selling it the following year and then re-purchasing it in about about 1874 (Booker 2012: 13). Moore’s other business interests in Maitland included an iron foundry and a timber business. He was also an agent for cedar-getters in the northern districts, producer of ‘Wilderness’ wines, Greta shale and coal companies, Moore’s Household Remedy, and the Colonial Mutual Life and Mercantile Mutual Fire insurance companies (Booker 2012: 13 and Armstong: 2012).

He appears a number of times in the local court including, for example, as consulting veterinary surgeon (MM28 Jun 1881; 19 July 1883), defending his employee and partner, Woodforth (MM 22 Jun 1871), and suing Cobb & Co for money owed (MM 26 Oct 1878). He also stood, unsuccessfully, for election to the municipal council (MM 8 Feb 1879).

It appears that Miarus and Alice Moore did not have any children.
